David’s Forgiveness, Part 13

The fulfillment of Nathan’s prophesyThis is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to bring disaster on you from inside your own household!  Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion.  He will have sexual relations with your wives in broad daylight!1—was dependent on David’s love and mercy for his sons, particularly Absalom.  The fulfillment of this promise then was dependent on David’s righteousness in a word, on his being a man after God’s own heart.  And I use the word dependent advisedly.  I don’t mean that God would have been unable to fulfill his promise if David, by punishing Amnon or executing Absalom, for instance, had actively attempted to thwart Him.  I mean simply that the Scripture presents me with a fact, David through love and mercy aided and abetted God in bringing disaster on himself.

And I am more convinced than ever that this particular concatenation of events cannot be construed as punishment for sin so much as the personal consequence of forgiveness.  God knew David would behave this way.  And, frankly, punishment for sin is more straightforward, less convoluted.  When David inquired of the Lord about a three year famine, the answer was simple, It is because of Saul and his bloodstained family, because he murdered the Gibeonites.2

Exactly when Saul murdered the Gibeonites is not obvious, unless they were among the victims killed at Nob by Doeg the Edomite.3  Joshua swore an oath to [the Gibeonites] in the name of the Lord God of Israel,4 and God honored that oath, one of mercy and compassion,5 centuries later.  David asked the Gibeonites, What can I do for you, and how can I make amends so that you will bless the Lord’s inheritance?6  The Gibeonites demanded seven of Saul’s male descendants.  The seven were executed and that year’s harvest was apparently a good one.  Though this sounds strange to contemporary ears it was fully in keeping with the promise of the law: I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me...7  To paraphrase Paul a bit, Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?8

I am persuaded, though I can’t reconcile all the details, that the events I called “David’s personal karma from the hand of Jesus,” have something to do with God prevailing when he is judged,9 and this has something to do with all things working together for good for those who love God,10 and making sins as white as snow.11  But does that mean that the believer in Jesus should expect a forgiven life something like David’s, not in specific detail but general contour?  Or has the Lord Jesus’ sacrifice taken care of all that once for all?  I have gone back and forth on this question many times.

Surely I hoped that trusting Jesus would lead to a life relatively free of suffering, that I would be healthy, wealthy and wise, so to speak.  I realize now that hope was essentially Asaph’s description of the lifestyle of the proud and wicked, when he envied those who are proud, as [he] observed the prosperity of the wicked12 (See Addendum below).

For they suffer no pain; their bodies are strong and well-fed.  They are immune to the trouble common to men; they do not suffer as other men do.  Arrogance is their necklace, and violence their clothing.  Their prosperity causes them to do wrong; their thoughts are sinful.  They mock and say evil things; they proudly threaten violence.  They speak as if they rule in heaven, and lay claim to the earth.  Therefore they have more than enough food to eat, and even suck up the water of the sea.  They say, “How does God know what we do?  Is the sovereign one aware of what goes on?”  Take a good look!  This is what the wicked are like, those who always have it so easy and get richer and richer.13

Paul didn’t require ever increasing prosperity from the Lord as a basis for his faith: I have learned to be content in any circumstance.  I14 have experienced times of need and times of abundance. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment, whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing.  I am able to do all things through the one15 who strengthens me.16  I recognize that this last verse is used to mean all sorts of things out of context but as I look at the Greek it seems to be saying something more like “in all I am able in this that strengthens me.”  The ability is to be content (αὐτάρκης) in this case, and that which strengthened Paul to that ability were the times of need (ταπεινοῦσθαι, a form of ταπεινόω) and times of abundance (περισσεύειν, a form of περισσεύω) he learned (ἔμαθον, a form of μανθάνω) from.

This is not to say that Paul didn’t learn this contentment from Christ.  Apart from Christ one is just as likely to learn a different lesson from need.  “If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again,” Scarlett O’Hara vowed dramatically before the intermission of the film Gone with the Wind.  When I was young and single after my first divorce I quit my job to study despite my Pastor’s counsel that he couldn’t see why anyone would give up a good job.  Now that I’m about the age he was when he said it, with two children in college, I relocated to keep my job (and my health insurance) despite the fact that I was cared for through all the years I had no permanent employment.  So am I faithless or prudent?

Let me add this as well.  Before I moved my ex-wife called to say that she, our daughter and son, and her mother would prefer my presence over my money.  In fact, her mother stated frankly that paying a child’s college tuition is wrong; children should pay for it themselves.  Still, I promised our children local college.  So, am I behaving like Jephthah, keeping my own word?  I think these are the kinds of things Asaph meant when he wrote, I concluded, “Surely in vain I have kept my motives pure and maintained a pure lifestyle.  I suffer all day long, and am punished every morning.”17

The word translated punished (tôḵēḥâ, ותוכחתי) was more commonly translated rebuke(s) or reproof in the NET.  It was translated argument(s) in Job and Hosea.  It was not translated in Psalm 39:11 (See Addendum below) in the NET but was translated rebukes in the NKJV: When with rebukes (tôḵēḥâ, בתוכחות) You correct (yāsar, יסרת) man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor.18  It is not too hard to imagine beauty melting away as punishment.  But from my perspective waiting for punishment wastes the short time one has to know God here and now.  There is rebuke, reproof and argument in abundance for anyone who actively studies the Bible to know Him.

Wisdom personified speaks in the Proverbs: If only you will respond to my rebuke, then I will pour out my thoughts to you and I will make my words known to you.19  But there are consequences for rejecting Wisdom: However, because I called but you refused to listen, because I stretched out my hand but no one paid attention, because you neglected all my advice, and did not comply with my rebuke, so I myself will laugh when disaster strikes you20

Then they will call to me, Wisdom continued, but I will not answer; they will diligently seek me, but they will not find me.  Because they hated moral knowledge, and did not choose to fear the Lord, they did not comply with my advice, they spurned all my rebuke.  Therefore they will eat from the fruit of their way, and they will be stuffed full of their own counsel.  For the waywardness of the simpletons will kill them, and the careless ease of fools will destroy them (See Addendum below).21  And despite what Asaph thought when his feet almost slipped,22 Wisdom concluded: But the one who listens to me will live in security, and will be at ease from the dread of harm.23

The Proverbs have much more to say about rebuke (translated punished in Psalm 73:14 NET): My child, do not despise discipline from the Lord, and do not loathe his rebuke.24  For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life25  The one who heeds instruction is on the way to life, but the one who rejects rebuke goes astray.26  The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, but the one who hates reproof is stupid.27  The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored.28  A fool rejects his father’s discipline, but whoever heeds reproof shows good sense.29  The person who hears the reproof that leads to life is at home among the wise.30  The one who refuses correction despises himself, but whoever hears reproof acquires understanding.31

There are warnings in Proverbs against rejecting rebuke or reproof: Severe discipline is for the one who abandons the way; the one who hates reproof will die (See Addendum below).32  The one who stiffens his neck after numerous rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy (See Addendum below).33  This latter warning is similar to what ultimately comforted Asaph (Psalm 73:15-20a NET):

If I had publicized these thoughts, I would have betrayed your loyal followers.  When I tried to make sense of this, it was troubling to me.  Then I entered the precincts of God’s temple, and understood the destiny of the wicked.  Surely you put them in slippery places; you bring them down to ruin.  How desolate they become in a mere moment!  Terrifying judgments make their demise complete!  They are like a dream after one wakes up.

Obviously I find it difficult to be comforted by this, but I wasn’t socialized in Old Testament times.  Exterminating the wicked inhabitants of the promised land and ruthlessly rooting out the sinner in their midst were major themes of Israel’s socialization.  Forgiveness of sin and sinners is the major theme of mine.  It is Jesus who announced and demanded this age of forgiveness, and Jesus who expounded eternal punishment in a lake of fire or the outer darkness for rejecting it.  The economy, if you will, has changed dramatically, making it much easier to forgive others.  No matter how offended I am or how begrudgingly I cling to my grudge, it is no match for eternal punishment, and I forgive from my heart so that [my] Father in heaven will also forgive [me my] sins.34

So I can assume that my life, trusting Jesus, will be filled with rebuke and security, reproof and ease from the dread of harm.  And if I look back and examine my life since I trusted in Him I do find that it has been filled with rebuke and security, reproof and ease from the dread of harm.  But still, I doubt sometimes and think if I only believed, I mean truly believed in Jesus, then that charmed existence I imagined before all of this began might be mine.  Oh, yeah, well, you know, like Asaph described the proud and the wicked.

Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.35  This is often denied here because Jesus wouldn’t laugh when disaster strikes you or mock when what you dread comes.36  The Septuagint tipped the scales for me: therefore I in turn will also laugh (ἐπιγελάσομαι, a form of ἐπιγελάω) at your destruction, and I will rejoice (καταχαροῦμαι, a form of καταχαίρω) when ruin comes upon you.37

The Greek word ἐπιγελάω can mean “to laugh at, mock, jeer” or “to laugh approvingly at (something).”  The Greek word καταχαίρω can mean “to exult with malicious joy” or “to rejoice, to exult over.”  The choice will be determined by what the hearer believes about Jesus, the wisdom of God.  I’m hearing the death and resurrection motif again.

How often does one in some kind of calamity cry out to God and then ignore Him once that calamity has passed?  Jesus didn’t grant that one eternal life to knowthe only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom [He] sent.38  This one who hated wisdom and did not choose the fear (φόβον, a form of φόβος) of the Lord,39 the word (λόγον, a form of λόγος) of the Lord (Elpenor English), desired Jesus’ death and resurrection only after being satiated with his own way: Therefore they will eat from the fruit of their way, and they will be stuffed full of their own counsel,40 devices (Tanakh), impiety (NETS), ungodliness (Elpenor English).  Now I want to know Him through faith in his word rather than guess at the vicissitudes of my life.

David’s song continued: Create for me a pure heart, O God!  Renew a resolute spirit within me!  Do not reject me!  Do not take your Holy Spirit away from me! 1  Whatever Daivid’s understanding of making sins as white as snow, he apparently grasped that creating a pure heart and renewing a resolute spirit was the work of the Holy Spirit rather than his own.  David continued: Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance!  Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey! 2

It was both surprising and encouraging to find this man after Jesus’ own heart in the Old Testament who would say, amen, to Paul’s saying, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence, for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort – for the sake of his good pleasure – is God.3 There is however a New Testament corollary to the concept of making sins as white as snow:  And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose4

For all things to work together for good for me, the effect of other people’s sins on my life must be neutralized.  One might say, though their sins are like red, they must be made white as snow in their effect upon me, though they are red like scarlet, they must be made like wool.  Here, on this side of the equation, Jesus provided all kinds of instruction for his followers to be part of the process of gathering with Him rather than scattering.5  First and foremost among these is, forgive: if you have anything against anyone, forgive (ἀφίετε, a form of ἀφίημι) him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive (ἀφῇ, another form of ἀφίημι) you your sins (παραπτώματα, a form of παράπτωμα).6  This is quite frankly the fastest way to mute the effect of others’ sins on my life. If God is for us, who can be against us?7 

If I thought of this as law instead of love, then I tried to puff up some phony forgiveness like a tea kettle or a “little engine that could,” or else God wouldn’t forgive me my sins.  But when I thought of this is as love rather than law, I realized I could take from the Lord’s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control that flows like a stream of living water through me, and—knowing that no one is less deserving of forgiveness than I—share the overflow of that mercy, grace and forgiveness and the gift of righteousness as freely with another as I have received it myself.

You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” the Lord Jesus quoted the limits on retribution He had placed in the law He gave to Moses.  But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer.  But whoever strikes you on8 the9 right cheek, turn the other to him as well.  And if someone wants to sue you and to take your tunic, give him your coat also.  And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.10  Follow me,11 Jesus said.  He wants his followers to join Him in blunting the effectiveness of sin, not as sin eaters per se, but more like sin shock absorbers.  This is the limit, from here the shit stops rolling down hill.

Give12 to the one who asks you, and do not reject the one who wants to borrow13 from you, Jesus continued.  You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbor” and “hate your enemy.”  But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you [Table], so that you may be like your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.14

This reminds me of the movie 300.  First the phalanx absorbs the shock of sin’s assault, then comes the push back.  And David continued: Then I will teach rebels your merciful ways, and sinners will turn to you.15  This teaching is not didactic but a loving demonstration of the very mercy that is its object.  Paul picked up on the militant spirit of overcoming, or conquering, evil with good (Romans 12:9-21 NET).

Love (ἀγάπη) must be without hypocrisy.  Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good (ἀγαθῷ, a form of ἀγαθός).  Be devoted to one another with mutual love (φιλόστοργοι, a form of φιλόστοργος), showing eagerness in honoring one another.  Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord.16  Rejoice (χαίροντες, a form of χαίρω) in hope (ἐλπίδι, a form of ἐλπίς), endure (ὑπομένοντες, a form of ὑπομένω) in suffering (θλίψει, a form of θλίψις), persist in prayer.  Contribute to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality.  Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse.  Rejoice (χαίρειν, another form of χαίρω) with those who rejoice (χαιρόντων, another form of χαίρω),17  weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly.  Do not be conceited.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil; consider what is good before all people.  If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all people.  Do not avenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God’s wrath, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.  Rather,18  if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing this you will be heaping burning coals19 on his head.  Do not be overcome (νικῶ, a form of νικάω) by evil, but overcome (νίκα, another form of νικάω) evil with good (ἀγαθῷ, a form of ἀγαθός).

I couldn’t help but notice how similar these instructions are to the love that fulfills the law (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NET).

Love (ἀγάπη) is patient (μακροθυμεῖ, a form of μακροθυμέω), love is kind, it is not envious.  Love does not brag, it is not puffed up.  It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful.  It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth.  It bears all things, believes (πιστεύει, a form of πιστεύω) all things, hopes (ἐλπίζει, a form of ἐλπίζω) all things, endures (ὑπομένει, another form of ὑπομένω) all things.

None of this, however, originates with me.  All of it comes from drinking and continuing to drink from that river of living water20 which is the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23 NET Table).

But the fruit of the Spirit is love (ἀγάπη), joy (χαρά), peace, patience (μακροθυμία), kindness, goodness (ἀγαθωσύνη), faithfulness (πίστις), gentleness, and self-control.  Against such things there is no law.

Forgiveness

After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to his disciples (John 20:21-23 NET):

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.  Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.”  And after he said this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive (ἀφῆτε, a form of ἀφίημι) anyone’s sins (ἁμαρτίας, a form of ἁμαρτία), they are forgiven (ἀφέωνται, another form of ἀφίημι); if you retain (κρατῆτε, a form of κρατέω) anyone’s sins, they are retained (κεκράτηνται, another form of κρατέω).”

In John 20:23 (NET) Jesus contrasted forgiving (ἀφίημι) sins to retaining (κρατέω) them.  The contrast in Matthew 4:11 (NET) is that the devil left (ἀφίησιν, another form of ἀφίημι) [Jesus], and angels came (προσῆλθον, a form of προσέρχομαι) and began ministering to his needs.  In Matthew 4:20 (NET) Simon (called Peter) and Andrew left (ἀφέντες, another form of ἀφίημι) their nets immediately and followed (ἠκολούθησαν, a form of ἀκολουθέω) [Jesus].  In Matthew 9:25 (NET) krateō, (κρατέω) is contrasted to ekballō (ἐκβάλλω):  But when the crowd had been put outside (ἐξεβλήθη, a form of ἐκβάλλω), he went in and gently took (ἐκράτησεν, another form of κρατέω) her by the hand, and the girl got up.

I get the point that to forgive another’s sins, I send those sins away from that person, creating a distance, rather than holding them close.  This is something I do in my mind, not recalling a sin as I recall the forgiven person.  But John 20:21-23 seems to indicate that the consequence of doing (or not doing) so is farther-reaching than my mind.

Jesus taught his followers to pray (Matthew 6:12 NET), forgive (ἄφες, another form of ἀφίημι) us our debts, as we ourselves have forgiven1 (ἀφήκαμεν, another form of ἀφίημι) our debtors.  How easily such prayer could become a self-invoked curse (Matthew 6:14, 15 NET): For if you forgive (ἀφῆτε, a form of ἀφίημι) others their sins (παραπτώματα, a form of παράπτωμα), your heavenly Father will also forgive (ἀφήσει, another form of ἀφίημι) you.  But if you do not forgive (ἀφῆτε, a form of ἀφίημι) others,2 your Father will not forgive (ἀφήσει, another form of ἀφίημι) you your sins (παραπτώματα, a form of παράπτωμα).

Jesus’ teaching recorded in Matthew 18:15-20 (NET) offers a counter example to 1 John 1:9 and 10, and aligns with his teaching recorded in John 20:21-23:

If your brother sins (ἁμαρτήσῃ, a form of ἁμαρτάνω),3 go and4 show him his fault (ἔλεγξον, a form of ἐλέγχω) when the two of you are alone.  If he listens (ἀκούσῃ, a form of ἀκούω) to you, you have regained (ἐκέρδησας, a form of κερδαίνω) your brother.  But if he does not listen (ἀκούσῃ, a form of ἀκούω), take one or two others with you, so that at the testimony of two or three witnesses every matter may be established.  If he refuses to listen (παρακούσῃ, a form of παρακούω) to them, tell it to the church (ἐκκλησίᾳ).  If he refuses to listen (παρακούσῃ, a form of παρακούω) to the church (ἐκκλησίας, a form of ἐκκλησία), treat him like a Gentile or a tax collector.  I tell you the truth, whatever you bind (δήσητε, a form of δέω) on earth will have been bound (δεδεμένα, another form of δέω) in heaven,5 and whatever you release (λύσητε, a form of λύω) on earth will have been released (λελυμένα, another form of λύω) in heaven.  Again, I tell you the truth6, if two of7 you on earth agree about whatever you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.  For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them.

This passage begins with instruction how to handle a person who will not confess (ὁμολογῶμεν, a form of ὁμολογέω) sin (1 John 1:9, 10 NET).

But if we confess (ὁμολογῶμεν, a form of ὁμολογέω) our sins (ἁμαρτίας, a form of ἁμαρτία), he is faithful (πιστός) and righteous (δίκαιος), forgiving (ἀφῇ, another form of  ἀφίημι) us our sins (ἁμαρτίας, a form of ἁμαρτία) and cleansing (καθαρίσῃ, a form of καθαρίζω) us from all unrighteousness (ἀδικίας, a form of ἀδικία).  If we say we have not sinned (ἡμαρτήκαμεν, another form of ἁμαρτάνω), we make (ποιοῦμεν, a form of ποιέω) him a liar and his word (λόγος) is not in us.

To confess (ὁμολογῶμεν, a form of ὁμολογέω) sin is to acknowledge the word (λόγος) of Jesus concerning sin, to agree with Him that the thing in question is sin.  The purpose is not to humiliate the sinner but to regain (ἐκέρδησας, a form κερδαίνω) a brother (as opposed to winning an argument).  That purpose remains throughout, up to and including shunning.  Forgiveness is not given out of the fear of Matthew 6:14 and 15, but on the basis of God’s own forgiveness through Jesus Christ.  It is also important that the λόγος of Jesus is truly the basis for determining sin as opposed to some distinctive of a religious sect.

The binding and releasing of Matthew 18:18 seem to correspond to forgiving and retaining sins in John 20:23.  There is apparently an ongoing debate whether the binding and releasing will have been or will be bound or released in heaven.  The point seems moot.  In either case the agreement of two on earth as to what is to be bound or released, forgiven or retained, carries the imprimatur of heaven.  It’s a sobering thought.  But the scale tips toward releasing and forgiving because of the character of God.

The passage continues (Matthew 18:21, 22 NET):

Then Peter came to him and said, “Lord, how many times must I forgive (ἀφήσω, another form of ἀφίημι) my brother who sins against me?  As many as seven times?”  Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, I tell you, but seventy-seven times!”

Then Jesus told a parable that might shed some light on how literal one should be about seventy-seven times (Matthew 18:23-35 NET).

Have faith (πίστιν, a form of πίστις) in God, Jesus told his disciples.21  For this reason I tell you, whatever22 you pray23 and24 ask for,25 believe (πιστεύετε, a form of πιστεύω) that you have received26 it, and it will be yours.27  The topic here is not forgiveness but faith in God and believing what one asks for in prayer.  Yet the connection between faith in God and forgiveness is so strong in Jesus’ mind that I find his thumb on the scale again (Mark 11:25 NET):

Whenever you stand28 praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive (ἀφίετε, another form of ἀφίημι) him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive (ἀφῇ, another form of ἀφίημι) you your sins (παραπτώματα, a form of παράπτωμα).

Watch yourselves! Jesus said.  If29 your brother sins (ἁμάρτῃ, another form of ἁμαρτάνω),30 rebuke (ἐπιτίμησον, a form of ἐπιτιμάω) him. If he repents (μετανοήσῃ, a form of μετανοέω), forgive (ἄφες, another form of ἀφίημι) him.  Even if he sins (ἁμαρτήσῃ, another form of ἁμαρτάνω)31 against you seven times in a day, and seven times32 returns to33 you saying, “I repent (μετανοῶ, another form of μετανοέω),” you must forgive (ἀφήσεις, another form of ἀφίημι) him.34  It is worth noting that the sinner’s repentance did not mean that the sinner’s sin had ceased.  On the contrary, Jesus’ thumb is most heavy on the scale, tipping it toward release and forgiveness, when sin against God was arguably at its zenith (Luke 23:33 NET):

So when they came35 to the place that is called “The Skull,” they crucified [Jesus] there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

It was then and there that Jesus interceded for all humanity (Luke 23:34a NET):

Father, forgive them (αφες αυτοις), for they don’t know (οἴδασιν, a form of εἴδω) what they are doing (ποιοῦσιν, another form of ποιέω).

He didn’t follow the rule of ἀφίημι He inspired in 1 John 1:9 and 10 or articulated in Luke 17:3 and 4.  Jesus didn’t wait for humanity to confess (ὁμολογέω) sin or repent (μετανοέω) but prayed that God his Father would forgive anyway.  It is safe to assume that Jesus has faith in God, that He believes what He prayed and that He expects to receive what He prayed.

Or, perhaps, αφες (a form of ἀφίημι) should have been translated leave rather than forgive in Luke 23:34 (NET) as it was in Matthew 15:14 (NET):

Leave them (αφετε αυτους)!  They are blind guides.36 If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.
